Vision is extremely essential in our daily life; in fact, according to the American Optometric Association (AOA), as much as 40% of Americans worry about losing their eyesight over their ability to hear or walk. Despite our eyesight being among our most treasured senses, however, many people don’t often take the steps necessary to maintain their eye health throughout their lives.
If you’re not sure how to properly maintain healthy vision, don’t worry. There are many things you can do to take good care of your eyes. While visiting a trusted eye doctor is an important step, there are a lot of things you can do on a daily basis to make sure your vision won’t get damaged. 1 – Eye Care Tip: Always Wear Sunglasses or Protective Eyewear When Necessary
In the same way, it damages your skin, ultraviolet (UV) rays can hurt your eyes as well. The effects may not occur immediately, but when your eyes have been exposed to these rays constantly, you may develop problems like cataracts, and in some instances, eyelid cancer.
When choosing sunglasses, be sure to go for one that blocks 99% to 100% of UVA and UVB rays. These glasses don’t need to be expensive; just review the labels to know the protection levels.
It’s also ideal to wear protective eyewear if you’re working with power tools or other dangerous materials. The right eyewear can protect your eyes from debris and chemicals that might affect their condition. For sports such as ice hockey, golf, and baseball, proper eyewear is also encouraged to prevent or minimize damage to your eyes when hit.

The health of your eyes and your entire body relies heavily on what you eat. Food rich in the following vitamins and minerals may help prevent common eye conditions and age-related vision problems:
- Omega-3 fatty acids – Fats are an essential part of our diet. They help regulate the function of our nervous system and boost the immune system while reinforcing cells. Most fish are rich in Omega-3 fatty acids.
- Lutein – This is an important eye nutrient often found in green, leafy vegetables. Other foods, such as eggs, are also rich in lutein.
- Vitamin A – Made up of fat-soluble retinoids, this vitamin is key for good vision, cell growth, and an overall healthy immune system.
- Vitamin E – A powerful antioxidant, it helps protect eye cells from free radicals. Vitamin E is found in nuts, sweet potatoes, and cereals.
- Vitamin C – Several scientific studies show that Vitamin C helps reduce the development of cataracts. This vitamin is often found in most fruits, particularly citrus fruits, and vegetables.
3 – Eye Care Tip: Avoid Staring at a Digital Screen for Too Long
Spending too much of your work or leisure time staring at a digital screen can take a toll on your eye health. Overexposure to these screens can lead to many issues, including eye strain, dry eyes, and blurry vision.
Following the 20-20-20 rule can help ease vision problems when you cannot completely steer away from digital screens.
For every 20 minutes spent gazing at your computer screen, look away for 20 seconds and stare at an object at least 20 feet away. This can help relax your eye tissues and muscles, preventing digital-related vision problems.
4 – Eye Care Tip: Schedule Regular Appointments with Your Doctor
When you’re seeing well and not having any issues with your vision, it’s easy to forget about scheduling an appointment with your eye doctor. What many fail to realize it that eye exams are not just for people experiencing changes in their sight.
These exams are a crucial way to detect even the slightest problems regarding your eye health, as well as detect other health issues, including diabetes and glaucoma before any other symptoms even show up.
Proper eye care should begin at an early age and should be an essential part of your health routine throughout your lifetime. While it’s good to undergo an eye exam every one to two years, it’s more effective to schedule the right frequency of exams according to your age.
For kids between the ages of two and five years, an eye exam should happen at age three; before first grade and every two years thereafter for children between six and 18 years; every two years for adults between 18 to 60 years; and annually for those aged 61 and older.
